Title:  Indian English Literature - Arundhati Roy

Date:  Friday, Feb 23, 2018    Time:  7:30PM - 9:00PM     Location:  Ananda Mandir

Description:  Indian English Literature or IEL refers to the body of work by writers in India who write in the English language. IEL is a notable stream in English literature for its quality and the size of readership in India and beyond. Arundhati Roy is probably the most prominent among the writers of IEL. In 1997, she authored her first fiction The God of Small Things, and received instant international acclaim along with the much revered Booker Prize. In the years that followed she took a rather long hiatus from fiction writing, which lasted for 20 years until the publication of her second fiction - Ministry of Utmost Happiness. In this session, we will briefly review her works and life while focusing on her new novel mentioned earlier. A cursory review of her social activism will likely follow as well. Debabrata Bhaumik, a veteran member of our alochana community, is going to lead this session.
