Title:  Nobel Prize in Literature ? Eurocentric and Politicized, or Free & Fair

Date:  Friday, Apr 26, 2019    Time:  8:00PM - 9:00PM     Location:  Ananda Mandir

Description:  Of the 114 recipients of the Nobel Prize in Literature to date, there have been two authors in Japanese, two in Chinese, one in Arabic and one from India. There has been a smattering of other people of non-European origin. Is this a matter of Eurocentricity and bias, or can it be justified in terms of the universalist goals set out for the prize at its inception? Or it is just a North South divide dominated by the white people and the forces of capitalism? We would examine if there is due process in picking the winners through a quick review of the awardees, especially the much talked about controversial cases, which is plentiful in supply. Amitabha Bagchi, a co-organizer of our alochana programs will lead this session with support from Subrata Bhaumik.
